I have a lot of people ask me what the process is when someone decides they want to build a home. Here I will break it down into steps for what I think are some helpful ways to get started.

Step 1: Do Your Research

Once you have come to the conclusion to build over buy, start doing your research. Find your budget, your desired square footage off of that budget, and begin looking into who you can hire for any help you may need. Whether that be an architectural designer for a custom home design, a contractor to build your home, or even a plumber.

Step 2: Start Looking at Floor Plans

A good place to start is looking at sample floor plans online. Begin to research examples of floor plans that include your desired square footage, bedroom count, and bathroom count. There are many examples out there, and it can be quite overwhelming to decide which direction to go. Always remember that in this stage it is okay to change your mind. Keep an on-going list of things you like and don't like, and be sure to save down examples of floor plans you may have found online so you can access them later.

Step 3: Collect Inspiration Images

Once you kind of have an idea on your layout, start looking at images of interior and exterior spaces. Visuals are key when it comes to creating something of your own. Spend time collecting images of designs you like whether it be from an online source, magazine, TV show, etc. I personally love to use the app Pinterest when searching for anything myself. Save all of these so you can easily share them with a designer or contractor in the future.

Step 4: Nail Down Your Design

Now that you have an idea of what you do and do not like, start to decide if you need to hire a designer. Did you find a floor plan that you like and want to make no changes? Usually you can purchase those premade plans online and provide your contractor with the drawings for an easy and fast start. Need some help making changes to an existing plan, combine more than one plan, or make one completely unique? Hire a designer to help you with your vision and plans to provide to your contractor. Step 5: Get Quotes

Now that you have a floor plan finalized and you are ready to start building, make sure to reach out to your local contractors for quotes. The cheapest option is not always the best option, so remember to read reviews and really look into their quality of work so you know your home is in good hands.

Last but not least, remember to have fun! Building a home can be overwhelming, always remember you are creating a space for you and your family to enjoy for years down the road!

I just saved this image. I love this mixture of exterior materials. I think the stone, white board and batten siding, and dark roof blend beautifully!
